I'm Alex Hubbard and I'm a progressive democrat running for congress in Brooklyn's District 9.
As a biracial first-generation American raised by a working-class single mom, I've faced a range of personal dualities: I'm not "latino enough" to fully embrace my heritage, yet not "white enough" to avoid racial discrimination; not "wealthy enough" to compete at the highest level, yet not "poor enough" to identify with systemic poverty—you get the idea.
I used to view my cultural position as a weakness, but have since grown to embrace it as a strength and a gift. Existing in the middle of many groups has helped me empathize with people from all walks of life, and Brooklyn is an incredible source of diverse and unconventional stories like (and unlike) mine. It's one of the many reasons I love to call this borough my home.
I'm calling on all of us to tap into Brooklyn's diverse and creative spirit to affect proactive change at a higher level. Who better to fight alongside our country's most progressive voices than leaders like us?
